Platystele stenostachya and Macroclinium dalstroemii - how to water?
Default Platystele stenostachya and Macroclinium dalstroemii - how to water?

Dear forum

I have my first orchids - Platystele stenostachya and Macroclinium dalstroemi - and they live in my terrarium at around 85% RH.

They are mounted on Mangrove wood in Sphagnum moss.

How often should I water them?
I water with RO water and with orchid fertilizer at 1/2 strength once a week.

Two lovely plants. I am especially fond of Macroclinium. Those spikes can rebloom - so don't cut them until they are very crisp and brown all the way down. When they are truly done, they are brittle and tend to fall off by themselves.

As far as watering frequency is concerned... observation is vital.. When the moss is just damp then it is time to water. You will soon get a good feel for the frequency under your conditions. (They don't want to be drippy-wet all the time, but also don't want to get dry) I would also reduce the fertilizer - these little guys don't want much. 1/4 strength every week or two is probably plenty.
