I would like to add some info to my orchid (and other) photos. I don't change the file name of my pictures, to make it easier for the computer to distinguish duplicates, but mostly to not have to make up unique names on my own. I shoot with a Canon SX40-HS and an iPhone 7.

I want to add my catalog number to the photo, as well as the plant (or cross) name. This info should not be in the image, just in the EXIF data. Then I'd like to sort on that data.

How do you manage naming and ID'ing your pictures?

Thanks

On my I-Pad I loaded a photo editing app called Aviary. It sounds as if it will do all the things you want to do. You may want to check it out

Is an image ID even in the EXIF data?

I have an advanced Canon compact and a Canon DSLR and do everything on the computer. I do one of two things, usually a combination of both:

*create a file name prefix during the upload process with the date and number sequence automatically added after, which works for me since I take many photos of a single orchid.

*Add tags with plant names and other info to the photos when importing in Lightroom. One of LR's strengths aside from editing is photo management, and almost any photo can be found in an instant with the use of tags and other EXIF data. You can also build smart collections using this info as well (ex: you have a smart collection that will gather all photos with Phalaenopsis and 2018 in the data) Lightroom is not free though (12€/mo), so this won't help you much.

Prior to using this system, I was (and still am using) an extensive filing system, with a folder per genus and then a subfolder per species/hybrid. No need to rename the file in that case.

Not sure that you can input information into the EXIF though, and if you can, it sounds like more work to manually add information to each photo than to set file name prefixes during import.
