Phal. schilleriana 'Selby'

This is a photograph of my schilleriana 'Selby'. My plant is a division, from the much larger mother plant. The mother plant was purchased from Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in the early 90's. This clone was sold in a test tube and was the only sample offered for sale. To my knowledge, my small division, and the mother plant, are the only two samples of Phal. schilleriana 'Selby'!

This species will usually has, two or more, spikes and each are branching. I, however, made sure that would not happen this time. This inflorescence began to branch I went out of town for two weeks and did not water and on my return the branches had died back.

Thanks for all the positive feed back, I was lucky to acquire the plant. My original assumption was “this plant is a 4n species”, however the flower quality is not full enough ... for the plant to be 4n. I had the ploid level counted, and that confirmed—this plant is 2n (diploid) and should only be breed with other 2n species.

There was a bit of wishful thinking when I had assumed--it was 4n, however, my main reason for assuming ... “the plant could be 4n”, was it's origins (Marie Selby Botanical Gardens). Also the fact it was a clone w/ the name 'Selby'.

The vegetative growth habit of this species is; multiple spikes, branching, and with many flowers (very high flower count), and massive foliage (i.e. My plant is a one year old division, in a 6” basket). Where in the case of a 4n sample of this species, the flower quality is generally better (better form). However, the flower count is not as high.

To show a representation of this; I will photograph the mother plant, that is also in flower at this time, and post pictures hear!

I wanted to post a photograph of the inflorescence, of the mother plant. And a photograph of the plant.

The photograph of the inflorescence clearly shows the branching nature of clone, as well as the flower count. The picture shows about two thirds of the inflorescence and there are many un-opened buds. The plant is carrying three inflorescence.

The photograph, of the plant, is to show the leaf size. The longest leaf in the picture is over 12 inches.

That is a such a beautiful, bright, clear pink. And lovely lip. AND gorgeous foliage.

As you know, you are lucky to have such a beautiful cultivar.

Couple of questions: Is it fragrant? And, have you considered having a stem cloned? I'm sure someone like Peter Linn would be thrilled to be able to offer some of those.

That is one drop dead gorgeous phal! I love the flowers (and I have a soft spot for branching phals) and I like plants with variegated leaves. If you ever clone or breed this plant, I'm more than interested!!! You are so incredibly lucky to have such a plant!!
