Default Pink and White Phals.

I'm wondering about the unlabled pink and white phals. that we see so many of at all the local garden centers. Are they species, primary species, are hybrids? And what are their names? Are there many different ones, are all they all the same?

If they have no tags they're most likely hybrids pink and white phals are all over the place in different sizes. As to what the original cross if there is no label your guess is as good as anyone elses. If the nursery doesn't cultivate from seed themselves or know the parentage you'd have to contact the vendor your local nursery got the plants from to ask them.

Weiss,

Most of the ones we see at Home Depot, Wal Mart, etc. are hybrids...

So I highly doubt they hae species Phalaenopsis there... and I am unfamiliar with the term 'Primary Species'? Did you mean 'Primary Hybrid'?

Most of those Phalaenopsis are crossed and re-crossed and crossed some more... they are so complex, there may be one or more instances where the same species (or hybrid) was used in that cross...

Pat I have to agree with you, I work for HD and when I was out in the garden department I tried to pick at the brain of our vendor and you talk about talking in circles on the hybrid (in which he did admit to) there are multiple crosses noting this type of propagating works for rapid production without the "orchid" quality. This apparently is a good way for a "budget" retailer to get the chids on the shelves. Than they bring in the award winners ribboned and all. You can try to contact the vendor, but I have as well by email an via phone and have not really gotten to far with either, as a matter of fact I am still waiting for an email from a buyer/vendor in regards to a phal and still not response. Seems so wrong not to give something a name ... keep us updated on your response to the vendor is you take this path...
