New Phal leaf limp & a bit yellow
Hi all,
I'm back! It's been a busy summer! I have a quick question on my phal..  My latest leaf is a bit soft (kind of falls to one side and not sitting up on it's own very well) and a bit yellow where the growth is coming out...the majority of the leaf is a nice green...I was wondering what this means? My other phals are all having new leaves too, but this is the only one that has this problem...it is in a north window and not getting as much light as the others...but phals like the shade don't they? so I don't think this is the problem...it is not overwatered, it's in a clear pot and the roots are plentiful, plump and green....it's in the original mix (looks like coconut fibre or something like that). This was a NOID I purchased back in May.

Welcome back! We missed you!
I don't really have a constructive comment other than with the Phals I have (and do) raised, each seems to do it's thing as far as limp, etc. In the end, if it doesn't shrivel (you know what I mean by that, right?) and continues with nice green growth and eventually firms up, then that is what that particular guy (or girl) does. Sorry I can't be more scientific, but Phals seem to just grow and the only thing I have a problem with is hail

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Yeah! Can't quite tell for sure, but roots look great! That's usually a tell-tale on Phals. All I see is pretty-common droop for certain plants. Let it do it's thing, but watch the roots. As long as they look green right after watering and as long as they look white just before watering you're in the clear (in my opinion). Others may have other advice here.

White roots eh? I never noticed ...all my phals seem to have green roots...I'll keep a closer watch to see if they do turn white before watering. Thanks for the heads up.

Second photo seems to show white roots. Can you post a more detailed photo?

I think it needs more light Helen. They like lower light levels than Catts but dim isn't good either. I'd be shooting for 1500-2000 fc. At your lattitude a north window is most likely too dim. JMO

Thanks, I missed that! Yes... mine are in south window, but screens are on window so not full sun - just very bright.

I tried to get a better picture, but it's a webcam! I don't have a digital camera yet...The lights are reflecting off of the roots so they look white, but they are definitely very very green.... my other phal is in a south window and it's two new leaves are reddish and firm...maybe too much light, LOL....my other one is in an east window and it's new leaf is just a normal green, but firm.
North window...I was wondering if it was too dim...I'll move it and see what happens....

The roots look fabulous but I agree with Terri it looks like not enough light. As Ross said some do droop but yours looks flipped over like weak growth and with those great roots the leaves should be more rigid.
