Meet mis Gyll (pronounce Jill)!

She's a seven years young Alaskan husky that my boyfriend and I adopted a year and a half ago from a sled dog rescue here in NH.

Having had a malamute before Gyll, I had been expecting the same kind of mischievousness, high energy and stubbornness that is often associated with Nordic breeds/ types. In fact, I loved this in my Mal.

Gyll, however, is none of that... I would describe her as slightly more energetic that a greyhound (i.e., couch potato that also loves to hike) and a good listener. I have to say, she's spoiled me with being able to let her off leash (note, many sled dogs cannot be let off leash, but we talked with one of the mushers and told him we would like a dog that had potential to be trained with that in mind). She is also incredibly sweet! I now recommend the rescue to anybody that takes an interest in her.

And, finally, my Maddi Moo (malamute) which crossed the bridge in February 2015 due to bone cancer. This picture, I think, really captures her mischievous side, which I loved.

Very cute dog. It's always so hard to lose them, but there is always someone needing a good home.

OK I'm smiling now! Gyll looks as if she'd be just as happy on a nice green lawn as on the snow. Your Maddie had a great pose in that foto that I'm sure makes you smile as well. They make us better for sure.

Thanks all!

I've always been closer to my pets than most people and the thought of not having a dog for any real length of time seems nearly impossible to me. I miss Maddi more than words can express. I got her as a four month old pup when I was in my senior year of high school and had her most of my adult life. She was there for me through thick and thin and taught me a great deal. One of those things was that dogs deserve so much more than many of them get. I made a lot of newbie mistakes with her that I have tried to "correct" with Gyll since I can't take them back with her.

I knew I really didn't want a pup again, even from the most responsible of breeders. We originally tried to adopt a retired greyhound. We can't really give the proper time to a high strung dog sometimes as we work a lot and don't have the energy for long walks + training + play every day. We got all the way though the adoption process but were declined several days after a home visit- they claimed due to open-backed stairs that led up to my apartment. Shortly after, my mom sent me a link to a dog at the sled dog rescue and the rest is history.

Gyll is older than I originally planned, but these sled dogs get younger, not older, after you bring them into a home. So many people ask me how old she is. When I tell them "Seven" they ask "Months?" She has really blossomed into a house dog. The most surprising thing to me was that, even though she had lived outside in a dog yard her whole life, I didn't have to house train her! If and when we are ready to adopt another, we will definitely go with another retired sledder. Many, many of them make excellent house dogs and it was hard to decide on one dog when we went to look at the 100+ at the rescue.
