We had a fully carpeted house in PA. We replaced it early on, and 25+ years later it still looked good, it it was a hell of a lot of work.
In this house in NC, the only things that are not wood or tile are the runner in the entry foyer, a small rug under a coffee table , and bath mats. I really prefer this!
Bought a Dyson V8 Animal vacuum, and I can do the entire house in about 20 minutes.

Nice! It could also probably do the cat(s) in a few seconds. Just got to drop the power a few notches - just in case - to ensure they don't get sucked into the machine hehehe.

I despise carpet and unfortunately for the first time in 25 years the place I am living has carpet (upstairs only). I owned my homes for the last 25 years and always removed any carpet and replaced it with wood (installing a floating floor is really not that hard). Can't do that with this rental. The way I cope... robot vacuums that are scheduled to run twice daily.

Use microfiber towels to remove the dust from the carpet. It pulls all the dust. Steam cleaning would be the best option for carpet cleaning !!

Currently trying to housebreak this lil fella. He is a cavachon (King Charles Spaniel x Bichon). Top notch hybrid Shed free and the sweetest little guy. Just peed on the carpet 5 minutes ago and he doesn't feel guilty about it lol
