Default I think my Phal has root rot! HELP!

I have 2 phalinopsis orchids and I think one of them has root rot. Most of the roots are flat and brown. The bottom of the base of the leaves is all black and it was not like that when I got it. a few of the leaves are also turning brown and comming off. If this is root rot how can I stop it? If it is not what is it? Thanks for your help!

Unpot it, soak in some water for ten minutes and see if any of the roots are green and plump. Trim off any roots that do not feel plump. If you have any good roots, use alcohol on any plant areas that are brown or black to dry and disinfect (not roots--it is too drying). Then repot in a pot that just fits the roots with a very open mix. If no roots are good, try the sprag/bag method. Good luck!

I only have like 3 good roots. What is the sprag/bag method? I am really new to this. I just got my orchids
1-2 months ago.

If you have green roots, no need to put it in a clear bag with a little moss or paper towel to provide moisture (sprag and bag). Is the black area on only the surface or does it go deeper? If it is deep, you may wish to carefully carve it out, then treat with alcohol. I recommend treating with alcohol daily for a week or two to keep disinfected and prevent spread.
As for the rest, I would trim off all bad roots, then find some twist-ties and something to stake the phal into a pot and use a medium that is very open. Leave uncovered the rotted area. I use lava rock for my orchids as roots + bark always resulted in rotted roots for me. Staking the phal will help prevent damage to newly growing roots caused by movement. Good luck!

Hydrogen peroxide (3%) can also be used to disinfect. I agree with the above suggestion that the rotten spot (if deep) should be removed, thoroughly rinsed out and disinfected. Also you may want cut off the spikes completely to avoid stressing the plant as it will need all it's energy to grow new roots.

How long would it take for the spikes to grow back after I cut them?!?! I used the Hydrogen peroxide. Will it take like 3 years? I hope not! It is my favorite out of 2.

It depends. If you can bring this orchid back to health and provide it proper watering, nutrition and light, it may reward you with a new spike even next year. But don't be discouraged if it doesn't. It may take longer for the orchid to acclimate to your environment. It takes practice and patience to grow orchids. A good thread to read is a sticky "phal abuse stops here". It contains lots of good info for beginners.
