Help me identify this?

I found this on one of my Phalaenopsis roots. They were on a dead portion of the root (and only on the dead portion). This is not the first time I have seen them, but this time I had macro lenses to snap a pic.

I would like to know what they are. And before you jump into conclusions yelling "red spider mites", no, they don't have legs. They don't move. They are not even mite-shaped.

They are bright red, spherical, with evenly placed bumps, varied size, sessile.

Maybe they are some kind of fructification from a saprophytic fungus? I must research more. Until I find an answer, I share my mysteries with you.

The fact that they are on the dead tissue only makes me agree with your final assessment.

The roots don't look dead to me.

I cut this root. It was completely empty. Velamen was like paper. Thin root inside was bone dry. Believe me when I say it was dead. That root was hollow.
