Dendrobium antennatum with small dark brown spots? Female
Exclamation Dendrobium antennatum with small dark brown spots?

Can anyone tell me what's going on with my Dendrobium antennatum? I have attached two images of the spots.

Assuming that someone can figure out what is hurting my little Dendrobium, how can I help it, and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Hi Ariel, I'm not sure what it is. Orchids get spots when they're not happy. This plant, and its relatives, grow like weeds when they're happy.

What is the relative humidity where the orchid lives? How do you water it? If the pot is full of sphagnum moss, do you let it get dry between waterings, or do you keep it wet?

It is full of sphagnum and I do let it dry out and it doesn't have high local humidity (I've been considering moving it to a glass terrarium, which has made a lot of some of my other plants extremely happy). I mist the plant until the sphagnum is thoroughly wet.

Do you think it would be happier in a terrarium?

When it's small it might be happier in a terrarium, since the humidity is higher. But it gets pretty big. Auburn doesn't have at least 50% humidity in the summer?

I wouldn't grow any Dendrobiums in the section Spathulata in Sphagnum moss. I'd use medium to large grade bark. They like more air to the roots.

A 2" pot is probably better than the 3" you have it in.

Grow intermediate to warm (60 F - 95 F).

Moderate to high humidity (60% - 90%).

Moderately bright indirect light.

These orchids are fairly straightforward, but they are not "bulletproof". There is a limit to how much they can bounce back.
