Insects, especially roaches, are notorious for eating flower buds. Unless you see a chipmunk actually nibbling the buds, I think that's unlikely the culprit.

Thank you! I will place some mothballs around the Vandas today! I appreciate all suggestions, as this is driving me crazy. I just had some beautiful Vandas bloom out yesterday and the blossoms are already being chewed.

In my experience, squirrels, chipmunks and rats will devour the entire flower in one "sitting". Mice tend to nibble away over a bit longer period of time. Slugs and snails just keep nibbling on everything but seldom eat the entire flower.

Cym, thanks for your reply. Basically they have devoured all of the petals, and only left the central part of the flower (overnight). I am pretty sure it is chipmunks. At another members suggestion, I placed moth balls in the baskets. Since then there has been no further damage. I have also put out rat poison blocks, which have been chewed on over several days.
At any rate either I have managed to kill off the invader or the moth balls are working. I will post an update a little later.
Thanks again to all of you who have offered suggestions.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and to give you an update. I put mothballs in the baskets as was suggested. I also had put out rat poison blocks that were chewed on for about 4 days and then no further chewing on the poison blocks. Also no more chewing on the orchid blooms. Today there is a foul oder in the greenhouse, so apparently there is a dead rodent. While I have not found the culprit, I am pretty sure it was a chipmunk. As I said earlier, I love chipmunks, but I love my Vandas more! : (

I love nature, too. But...we try to keep it in balance.

Start growing stapeliads. Then nobody will pay attention to foul odors.
