Dendrobium Spectabile Pseudobulbs Cracking! Male
Question Dendrobium Spectabile Pseudobulbs Cracking!

So I have been growing a den. Spectabile since February. It has been doing great, sending up several new growths, lots of new roots, etc. However, I just noticed while watering this morning that, in just what seems like overnight, the two newest pseudobulbs/canes that are maturing have developed splits or cracks running vertically along the sides.

The plant sits in 2-3 hours direct sun around mid morning in northern Louisiana. I give it a splash of water through the bark medium that is capped with sphagnum to help keep this guy moist, and once a week I give it a good soak. Lately the nights have dipped down into the low 70's and upper 60's. Not sure if this temperature change caused this or if I am not providing proper care that has lead to this.

Anyone know what the possible causes/cures could be?

Oi. I have the same problem! My spectabile var. aureum has super fat psb's that just keep expanding and I noticed yesterday it has a giant split in it. I'm not so sure what could be causing so we're stuck there. I'm not sure it's a bad thing either, unless you're really care for aesthetics.

I have this happen - and I believe I read once someone suggesting that it's due to low humidity, which would make sense in my case (frequently very dry climate), but I don't know about in your case ...
It's never turned into a problem on mine.

The inner layer is growing fat so fast that the outer layer is pushed to crack....notice that the crack is dry and have produced a scar tissue covering; that prevents anything to enter and protects the cell membranes....the plant heals itself...just like stretch marks during pregnancy or if you suddenly gain weight

Wow! I noticed it in my Coelogyne cristata yesterday and was wondering what was that. Happy it's no harm to the plant. This one suffered a bit - I bought it and noticed it was planted in soil. I repotted her and hope she survives.

My Den spectabile has that too... I think it's just a scar from growing too fast

I've never experienced this problem, but recently I was reading a post about the same problem on an italian forum. Someone said that is nothing to be worried about, but no other explanation has been given.
Perhaps a low humidity and a strong heat (plus full sun) can create this.
