Harmless? Grab one and get back to me on that! As far as the op repelling snakes, ain't gonna happen. Better to announce your own presence loudly in away the snake can understand. Snakes are very sensitive to vibrations.
They want to get away as badly as you want them gone! Stomp your feet when approaching the area in question, give the bench a little kick or two when you get there.
