Update on Rootless Cattleya Maikai!
Default Update on Rootless Cattleya Maikai!

I am so impressed with how well this plant is doing and I thought you would all like to hear about it! I thought it would surely die when I made my previous post. There were no roots that were green whatsoever. It was severely rotted when I bought it. I left a couple of dark brown roots shorter than an 8th of an inch on the rhizome that weren't mushy. However, it had three quite healthy leaves (one with a bit of fertilizer on the end, but not much). It was probably a good time of year for it to be struggling. I used the sphagnum moss/bag method and kept it under a plant light constantly. The bag was sealed almost entirely and I didn't experience any problems with molding. Suddenly, the old pseudobulbs started swelling. I thought perhaps it was because they were finally getting water. However, they started three growths (one on each) which look like pointy little leaves that are growing very quickly! I think these are new pseudobulbs, which means the plant intends on blooming? In addition to the pseudobulbs, tiny green nubs are protruding from the sides of some of the old pseudobulbs (about the size of the head of a pin) which I can only surmise are the beginnings of more roots! I will post pictures when I have a chance. I'm very excited since I am definitely a beginner but I seem to be having great success. I tend to my orchids every day with a lot of love and care How much root growth do you think I should have before I take it out of the bag and put it back in a pot?

Awesome! If the plant was in very poor shape, it may take some time before it's strong/big enough to bloom, so it's not too likely to bloom off the new growth. But, it sounds like it's headings in the right direction!
