OMG; Diagnosed thrip problem

Hey guys, I brought A sample cut of my phal leaf to the farm store. The owner told me it definitely is mites. He gave me an insecticide for the problem that works again many other pests that suck nutrients from plants; and it indeed works on Thrips as well Paul. His instructions were to use it once a week for 3 weeks in the first month then once a month after as a prevention.
Its called NewMectin; and it has Abamectin in it as well as other inert ingredients. Its a concentrate and the dosage is 1/2 a tsp to a gallon of water.
As we as orchid growers should already know is that the fungicide & insecticides should be rotated between types to prevent insect and such developing a resistance to it.
I am making a batch right now and spraying all the orchids in my window.

P.S. Paul the owner of the store said that another sign of thrips is when new bud just never open and get mushy and fall off.

False spider mites, no web as some make , they love Phals the hatch cycle is short have to treat every 3 days Safers insect soap will kill them but what I have found to really do the job is the (again) Bayer rose insect slow release granules . I use them on my Phals. twice a year no mites and does
not damage the plant . Gin

When I go back to Boca Raton for Thanksgiving I intend to go back to Home Depot to look for the Bayer & Ortho product lines.

Malathion works well on mites and most other insects so you might want to look for that too. It seems quite easy to find as well.

Methylated spirits work too if you don't have many orchids. And you can just wipe down the leaves with it using a small paint brush.

Take no prisoners ! miss one egg and they will come back they hide under any dry matter ( girdle around ) where the leaves connect I have done the wipe method works for awhile till they re-group

Apparently they like an environment that isnt too humid. So I take it Floridians dont suffer much from then till autumn and beyond...hehe

The recommendations that I have seen say to use only 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Methylated spirits is a term not used in the US but I believe that this means denatured ethyl alcohol. If so then using methylated spirits is counter to the recommendations that I have seen.

Interesting....Well this is what I am told from One of the largest orchid nurseries in Thailand.... Idk to be honest.
