Those are not mealybugs they are Boisduval scale and it's a pretty bad infestation. I'm battling these guys right now. I have a mild infestation but it is on multiple plants. Mealybugs are way bigger and you can see the outline of their bodies with the naked eye. I use rubbing alcohol and a old toothbrush to dislodge the females. The alcohol does not kill the eggs so you have to keep on it. I'm also using a systemic pesticide since I have so many plants infected. Here is a link about Boisduval scale. Scroll down and you will see pictures of what they look like up close and what they look like at their different life stages. On page five there is a picture that looks a lot like yours.http://www.sdstate.edu/ps/Severin-Mc...n-orchids2.pdfWhat I have read is that the cottony ones are the maturing male scales and they swarm around the females which have a protective dome over them. When you clean up your plant make sure you dislodge the female domes and the alcohol will kill the bug. If you don't dislodge the dome the bug won't die from the alcohol. The female lays eggs under the dome so check the plant often for the eggs maturing into adults. You got to break the life cycle. For comparison here is a pic and an article about Mealybugs. http://www.sdstate.edu/ps/Severin-Mc...on-Orchids.pdf Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

What does not show in the photos is what looks like a web at the top of the pot near the base of the stems. I assume that is silk of some sort from the bugs or their larvae. So, just to be sure, I am going to discard the current growth media and repot the plant in new media, and keep an eye on the plant for new bugs.
If you see any white stuff on any part of the plant, get them off. They are all the same bugs (soft bodied scales). The ones you see toward the base of your plant are attacking the dormant eyes or the base stem itself. Hurry!

The picture posted by Wynn was an exact match to the infection.

As much as I hate to even though it had not flowered for me, yet, I've decided to get rid of the plant. If they were mealybugs, I likely would have tried to save it. However, from what I read, this particular type of scale is nasty and very difficult to eradicate.

I bought the plant from Lowe's. It was a gro-more plant, very inexpensive at under $13, and my guess is that it was already infected when I got it since the infection is so severe. I think it would take more time and money than I paid for the plant to nurse it back to health - as much as I hate to put it that way.

I hate getting rid of plants for any reason.

I also think that I would be endangering our other houseplants, too, by keeping it; therefore, it seems too risky to keep.

We had an outbreak of aphids about two years ago which spread to many of our house plants. We eventually were able to cure the outbreak by closely inspecting the plants that were the most susceptible to the infection, and picking off the aphids with tweezers, alone. I still had to get rid of one plant, however, we were lucky enough to be able to save a few non-infected clippings. That was a painful enough experience, and I do not want to go through that again with a bug that sounds as difficult as scale is to eradicate.

On closer inspection, the dried coverings that others said to remove are all filled with the bugs.

Anyway, now I know what to look for when I buy more orchids in the future.

That said, I bought two other orchids at the time (also gro-mores) that are doing fantastic. Another cattleya and a dendrobium aggrgatum. They each have no signs of infection, and I hope to keep it that way.

Although this was a difficult decision to make, thank you to everyone for the help.

I probably would of tossed it too. It's just not worth it. When I water I check over the plants for any signs of bugs. Keep a close watch on your other plants. Hopefully those buggers didn't spread to any of your other plants.

Pravado will also kill scale insects systemically.

I had those too this summer, I unpotted the plant took all the bark off and soaked the plant upside down in the soap and cinnamon oil that bud is always telling us about. It SEEMED to do the trick but time will tell I suppose. It was a VERY large plant so I divided it at the same time. It is now in 2 6" pots and 3 4" pots..can keep a better eye on it that way....Jean

Unhappy Boisduval Scale

You have IMHO the worst kind of scale to get rid of. I've been fighting this dreaded pest for years. Be vigilant with your treatment. Here is a link that may be of help-
I've found they are especially fond of Cats. Good luck.
