Think you could get a bigger photo up?
|
Some mites don't spin the webs, some do.
|
Ok, so I have my computer back and will upload the pic once I get an account to a picture forum.
A few more questions though. When is it safe to move my quarantined orchids back into my collection? And how do I know if other orchids have them despite no visible signs at this point, like webs or that rust color? Also, I will be posting a pic of a masdie that has this rust color to an extreme but I'm not so sure it's the same issue and would love your thoughts and opinions since it is one of my first masdies and I have. I experience. |
Hi Paul , Take a wet tissue and wipe across the spots / leaf if you get orange streaks on the tissue then it is spider mites that is how I check my plants for them. Some do not make webs .. Gin :)

Ok, so I take it I should do this with all of my orchids to find out if they have them or not then.
As promised (sorry for the long delay, my computer was in the shop), here are the pics. This is the one that alerted me to an issue that I tried to post but was too small. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...sue-mobile.jpg Here is the Masdie, but I'm not so sure it's the same issue. I noticed it started this when I believe it was getting too much light, but I'm not so sure. It is with my other isolated orchids. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...sue-mobile.jpg So when will it be safe to move them back with the others, assuming the others are not infested as well. I'm guessing when I do the wipe test and find nothing on any of the leaves. Thanks for the replies everyone! |
So did the wipe test find spider mites on these ones? You will need to treat regularly for a few weeks for sure to get rid of any that are newly hatching. They thrive in warm dry conditions, so misting and upping humidity can help slow them down.
One of my masdies got a lot of spots from what I think was heat stress. It didn't get overly warm but its all I can attribute it to and I read they can do that. They didn't look exactly like that but were on the underside of leaves. |
The masdies started on the undersides and have taken over the whole leaf.
And I did a dry white towel rub against these and came up with red spots. I have used the mixture bud suggested, and the regimen he suggested. This will be the fourth week in, spraying religiously every weekend. So I'm assuming I should take the white towel approach on each leaf before moving back to see if there is anything still there. |
I would definitely make sure there are no more showing on a white towel before moving them back. Then just for caution's sake I would wait a bit longer!
|
I personally treat plants until I see no more pests, then wait 6 weeks after the last treatment. If I dont see any pests 6 weeks after the last treatment they go back in to my normal grow area.
