What is the best dilution rate for Safer Insecticidal Soap on greenhouse orchids?

I've been having problems with mealy bug, scale and spider mites in my warm greenhouse. After using both Orthene and Malathion, the problems persist. I would like to try a less toxic product such as Safer Insecticidal Soap, but I'm not sure of the rate of dilution to use which would be appropriate for a mixed collection of orchids. Often, recommended rates of dilution for orchids are less concentrated than for other plants. Safer's does not list orchids on their label. Although the most visible infestation is on a few Cattleya plants, I tend to treat all orchids enclosed in the same space, including Paphs, Phrags, Phals, Oncidium Alliance, Vandas, etc. Recommendations would be most welcome. I mix Safer insecticide soap according to the label and it has never harmed any of my orchids. Twice a year I spray all my plants (including uder the leaves) with a horticultural oil. The one I use is Organicide but there are several others. A week later I spray everything with Safer insecticide soap. I do it in the spring and fall. Oil can burn orchids during the heat of the summer. One other thing, I could be wrong but, I feel like my orchids are much more resistant to diseases since I've been using liquid seaweed (or kelp) suppliment along with my fertilizer. The one I use is Maxicrop but there are many others. Good luck.

Thanks, Tucker85. The label on my Safer's container has faded in just the wrong place for me to get the dilution rate. I think it says 2.5 oz per gallon, which translates to 5 tablespoons per gallon. Is this the dilution rate you use? Also, I like your protocol for pest control. Using toxic chemicals has become increasingly hazardous to my health. Could you recommend a source for Organicide? Alternatively, could I just use Ultra Fine Spray Oil, which I already have on hand? I appreciate your response. Kathleen

That's the same rate I use. I never had any problem using Safer Soap, actually all my chids seem to love it! But Safer is very mild, and needs to be frequently reapplied if there is an infestation. I just purchased Safer 3-in-1 garden spray, but I only used it on a phal and an onc so far.

Hey there...

I've also used Safer on orchids (oncids mostly) with no harmful effects at that dilution rate. I agree with Judi tho it does need to be reapplied frequently to be effective. I usually spray every 2nd or 3rd day for at LEAST a week usually two. In between days spraying with the Safer I spray off leaves with plain water... I've found Spider mites to be especially tenacious since new eggs will hatch even after the first treatment. Getting the underside of the leaves is definitely important!!

As for scale... I've never had orchids with it but the houseplants that have gotten it I usually just toss out since its so hard to get rid of.
