Black Spots on Phal Female
Default Black Spots on Phal

Hi,

I received this no id phal as a xmas gift and noticed it had a few black spots under one of the leaves. I ignored it and hoped it was not a big deal but now I noticed it spread to the underside of the leaf on top of it.

What is it and what should I do? Please note that I took this photo with my cell phone and it doesn't accurately reflect the color of the actual leaf. The leaves are dark green from lack of light. I've opened up my sheer curtain to give them more light. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Susan

It is hard to tell from your pictures but it could be a bacteria or fungal infection from wet leaves. Do you mist the plant?

Sorry for the poor photo. I have taken new photos and attached them below. The first photo is the underside of a middle leaf where new spots have appeared. The 2nd photo is an overall photo that shows where everything is in relation to the whole plant.

The phal originally had a dark spot on the bottom leaf. I disregarded it, since there was no change. Recently as in the past week or so, I noticed these new spots in the leaf above the bottom leaf. It just happens to be that these two leaves touch so my guess would be that it's related to the original spot. I'm hoping it's nothing serious and can be easily remedied!

After I repotted it, I put the pot in a container and filled it with warm water for 10 minutes to let the bark really soak. A few leaves got a little wet, so I did my best to dry it with a paper towel with extra attention to the crown. The root exposed looked like it was drying up, so that's when I started misting the top layer every morning. I do touch it to see if it's moist; it's bone dry as the air is dry. When I mist, I lift all the leaves and aim the nozzle down at the medium. I do inspect the underside of leaves and the crown to make sure that I do not get any moisture there.

What is this? Is this serious? Do I need to do anything or am I worrying for nothing?

Susan
