I'm going to go get the Bayer 3 in 1. This #$%^# stuff is driving me nuts. I'm to the point of trashing the plants on the front porch. It drives me crazy to walk by them to the front door and know the damn things are lurking there. I can tell when they are back...they (the orchids) take on a sickly green color where the scale is perched.

Try it you will like it. really spray everwhere and heavy on the plant. Look again in about 10 days, I usually do a second application at that time anyway

You might be able to sit on the front porch and if its quite hear the little buggers calling 911 for help

So would you use the Bayer 3-1 as a preventative? Do you mix it with soap? if so, how much?

if you get the RTU (ready to use) just blast away at them. If its concentrated form of product, them mix to instructions on the label with water and some wetting/penetration agent.

I've started using Merit 75. I am not in a position to spray the plants, but drenching the medium is a can do. Scale is flacking off quite lovely now and no new signs of invasion. One more application necessary according to reports, but so far, NICE!

If you would like to give something else a try, I found a good pest control/remover recipe in the Canadian Orchid Congress new letter. I have tried it, been using for a month or so and appears to be working, it's for problems with mites, scale and mealybugs.

In 1 litre spray bottle combine:

5 to 15 ml of baby oil
a squirt of liquid dish soap
100 ml isopropyl alcohol
fill to 3/4 with water
portions are not critical.

That is the recipe that I was using, Brenda....well, less the baby oil. The oil sort of scares me with the heat and sun in Florida.

The soap is the "surfactant" for the oil, so that it will mix (at least for spraying purposes) to be applied. It is supposed to suffocate the scale. Does anyone know the recipe for the 409 mix? For those who don't have 409, it's just a general purpose cleaner. I think Simple Green might be a decent substitute, although I haven't tried either, yet! Thanks for the info!
