I have friends in Pompano Beach. They hang most of their Vandas under trees in dappled shade, so they never get full sun. Another is mounted on the north side of a palm tree but down low so other trees partially shade it.
Insects called thrips (one thrips, multiple thrips) can eat Vanda root tips. Do some reading on those.
You might also learn a lot if you subscribe to the Motes Orchids newsletter. Each month you get information on what to do that month for your orchids.

I'll look into the thrips and the newsletter. Do you have any advice on how to keep them healthy, though? We have a spot for them in nondirect sunlight, so they should do okay. But they keep loosing roots and leaves.
