Very Sick Vanda: Sarao Cherry Bomb
Default Very Sick Vanda: Sarao Cherry Bomb

I got this orchid a couple of months back. It was doing fine, but it went downhill fast. The roots almost all died, and it lost almost all its leaves. I was told it had some sickness, and I just soaked it every day since that's all I was able to do. It got better Recently with a couple of healthy roots and a tiny new knob for a new spike grew, and a new leaf started. But the knob fell off a couple of days ago, and it just lost one of its healthy roots. I very much want this orchid to survive, so I need advice. I live in Florida and fertilize all my orchids every week, starting last week. I soak them every other day. Advice would be appreciated greatly.

What are the lowest temperatures it's seen? Vandas drop leaves when they get cold.

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I'm more worried about the roots and the lack of growth. The current temp during the day is around 35 Degrees Celsius During the night its around 20

If you're in Florida, not in the far south, and it was outside all winter, it probably got too cold. Vandas are well-known to drop lots of leaves in just one cold night.

Would that also explain the complete death of all the roots and the stunted growth? What should I do? Honestly, the orchid isn't looking good right now. Should I take my other 2 vandas inside when it's colder out?

Yes. Try to keep them above 55 F / 13C at night. Higher is better.

Give it regular, good care. It should grow more roots and leaves as the weather warms. Water daily, fertilize frequently, keep warm and humid, and give as much light as it can take without sunburn. A monthly Kelpak soak would help promote root growth.

Alright, I'll keep it up! I'll also buy some Kelpak. Thank you!
