I was using "soil" in generic terms. A soil drench is generally required to treat an established Thrips population - as this is the only way to kill the larvae -- and adults fly around. Azamax (which is essentially concentrated Neem oil) mat be the best bet to treat a develpoed population. I have effectively used Parrafin oil to treat a wide variety of pests on plants & herbs. However, I immediately treat upon discovery of pests and have never had to deal with a bad outbreak (I try to use the mildest treatment.) If it is bad go nuclear, and use the Azamax.

Update: the predatory mites went battle royale mode and killed each other and not the thrips on the flower heads, so I am going with Azamaz as a foliar application on the orchids and Spinosad + Azamax combo on the rest of the houseplants.

We will see how it goes after 3 applications of Azamax. I have high hopes it eradicates them from starvation.

azamax and spinosad have both worked for me. I had a major infestation come in with some cut dahlias from my garden. both of these will work much better using pure water, highly alkaline or high TDS will reduce their efficacy.
