Any issues with the leaf? Please help!
Question Any issues with the leaf? Please help!

Hi, I recently purchased an orchid and noticed some discoloration on one of the leaves - I’m wondering if there’s anything wrong the circled part of the leaf in the attached photo?

Thanks!

Hard to see any problem in the photo. But orchids are living things, and have imperfections. Unless it is something that is spreading and clearly damaging, likely just part of life.

From that one photo, I'm not really seeing anything to worry about on that leaf. I grow a number of Phals, in fact, that's the only type of orchid I grow right now. Occasionally, there will be a plant that just looks perfect in every way, but more often, each plant will have its own little eccentricities. A crooked leaf here, a scar or mechanical damage there, a leaf or part of a leaf that is not of a perfectly uniform color or texture.

Keep an eye on it, of course, and if it gets worse or seems to spread, let us know.

Thank you for your replies! Some people told me certain infections could look like this so I just wanted to make sure, it’s a healthy looking plant otherwise and I’m excited about the keiki that’s developing

A bonus! Let those roots get nice and long before you even think about separating it. And that can take awhile... I have one, that produced leaves on the spike, in February. Then some flowers. Flowers went through thier cycle, faded and the spike above the leaves eventually dried up, leaves looking good. One of those sets of leaves has JUST started to produce roots, the other probably will too. This is mid-JULY and likely still several months before they can stand alone. So patience!

Thank you all so much for your replies! I’ve definitely learned to be patient growing orchids

I have a little update regarding the leaf - it has turned a bit soft and I found a part that’s not smooth / lumpy on top and has some indentations on the bottom. I’ve attached some photos, is this anything to be worried about?

That's not normal. It could be residual damage from insects biting the leaves previously. It could be fungal infection. It could be virus. The only way to tell viral infection is to test.

I suggest contacting a nearby County agricultural extension office or a University agriculture department to see if they can identify it.

Is it a lower leaf (older)?
