Is there hope for this phal?

Hi,

I'm so sad that this orchid has developed crown rot. It has been one of the first ones I owned since I started the hobby. It started shedding off lower leaves first I checked for stem rot and since it didnt seem like it I just ignored and now there is only one leaf left. I just put some cinnammon powder in the crown. Are there any chances that it will survive. Its a very orchid with good roots and even bloomed this year. I wish I had caught the crown rot earlier.

I don’t have experience with crown rot, but I wouldn’t give up on it just yet. I do have more free time than a lot of people and enjoy plant experiments though. If it is going to survive it will need to grow a new leader/basal growth since the crown of yours isn’t viable anymore. It won’t be using as much water so drying time between watering may be a little longer.

Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into just the crown. Let it sit for a minute or two, then pour it out. Blow out the remaining fluid or dab it with tissue. Crown rot isn't caused by overwatering. It can happen after water stands in the crown for too long during periods of high or low temperatures.

I was a bit scared to try hydrogen peroxide into the crown because it eventually fizzes and turns into water and if its not dried properly it might promote the rot further. But let me try that tomorrow.

I've had a Phal survive crown rot, and develop a new growth to take over. As long as that last leaf doesn't die there is a chance of survival. My experience with Phals is once all the leaves are gone, regrowth is slim even if the roots look good.

It can still survive even if all the leaves are gone. This little one was just a 3cm dried black stump on top of a bunch of still healthy roots. I was convinced it wasn't making it, but after a little over a month, a new growth appeared, and this is what it looks like a few months later.

So not entirely impossible, but you'll need to arm yourself with a lot of patience . Good luck!

Thats true, I really hope this one does survive against all odds and somehow holds onto the 1 leaf that is left.

Wow I'm amazed sometimes at how hardy some plants are no matter how desperate the situation they bounce back. I'm hoping that mine will also not give up.

Hello all,

I wanted to give an update on this phal. Luckily its still holding into the single leaf although I can see there is light yellowing. I noticed this green nub growing from the bottom today. It doesnt look like root nor is it mitten shaped. It looks more like a hook. I'm attaching some pictures. Please lmk what you all think it could be. I'm hoping its a basal keiki.

That probably is a basal growth. (Keikiis come on the flower stalks of Phals.)

I hope that isn't cinammon on roots. It dries them and can damage them. The roots you showed at first were healthy, needing no treatment.
