Zygo with Rotting Bulbs
Default Zygo with Rotting Bulbs

I have no idea what I am doing wrong
PLEASE help this is my favorite orchid and it is suddenly struggling, I reduced watering which seems to be worsening everything else because I had rotting bulbs… I removed 3 completely rotten bulbs today and treated with cinnamon powder

I suspect the medium has something to do with it. What are your conditions? Min temp, humidity, growing indoors or outdoors?

I am in Miami area, so min temp is in the 80s
It is in the shade with morning sun with constant air flow, fan is on. And it is in sphagnum moss

Do you think I should repot it? I have bark and moss based medium, I repotted it a year ago when I got it and it has bloomed 3 times for me

I believe your environment is very humid. If that's so, I would change the medium and try to put it in a drier location. Of course a change in medium would be essential in my view...something that drains fast such as bark mixed with LECA.
Also your temps are too high for Zigo's, but with adequate care it's possible to grow them. They need a drop in temperature to bloom.

Only a few Zygo. species will tolerate Miami heat. Most of the hybrids have this problem, too. For example, a commercial grower told me Zygo. Advance Australia was bred to tolerate higher temperatures, which means up to 70 F / 25C, but it doesn't do well higher than that. Do you know the name of your plant?

Zygo. triste will tolerate your conditions. It has nice blue, fragrant flowers.

Mine is a Zygo Jumping Jack, do you think it should be brought inside for the duration of summer heat?

Jumpin' Jack (no G) is a cool growing plant. I would definitely bring it inside right away.

Zygos with cloud forest ancestry are perfect orchids for growing indoors, in air-conditioning, during the summers.
The other tip...when watering, do not get water on the leaves. Water under the leaves. They do tend to rot easily without great air-flow.

I have three Zygos that are all that are enjoying the A/C this summer.

Not that you asked, but Galeopetalum Starburst Parksided is a hybrid of Zygo Jumping Jack and Galeottia Fimbriata. The Galeottia is a hot growing orchid native to Venezuela and Columbia.

So this hybrid looks similar to Zygo Jumping Jack but can be grown in much warmer temps due to the parentage from the Galeottia. You might have better luck growing this one in your area and it looks pretty.

I got mine from Brookside Orchids, but I think I saw that Hausermann’s also had them.
