Bush snails- will full repot cure? SH culture?
Default Bush snails- will full repot cure? SH culture?

I discovered that an orchid I purchased several months ago had snails when I went to remount it. I removed all the old moss, used a new mount and new moss and didn't really think too much about it further.

I have found another plant that was in very close proximity is also now infested. I am repotting that as well.

Question- is a simple rinse and repot with all new media enough? How tenacious are the eggs or juveniles? I'm wondering if I should have done more? The infestation was not severe as far as I could tell, but I did find several adults.

Also, can you develop a snail infestation in semi-hydro culture? It seems that media would be less conducive to snails but that's why I'm here to ask.

Thanks.

You can get all kinds of critters living in SH pots (pill bugs, bush snails, fungus gnats, etc). They like the humid environment during the day and crawl out at night to chew divots in your leaves and root tips, or they stay inside and feed on the algae/organic build up. I usually just sprinkled snail bait pellets on top of my pots, but maybe a bottle cap full of beer in each pot would work. I took care of the algae build up by wrapping the pots in foil, which also slowed down pill bugs et al from climbing in the holes.

Repotting is not adequate to get rid of bush snails. Search Orchid Board on "snails coffee."

Caffeine is toxic to snails and similar criters...they will flee or die.

Yes, thanks, I did a search and most of the posts seemed to me looking for treatments without repotting. A few posts off handedly referred to not being able to repot an entire collection hence my question if repotting would be the best treatment assuming no visible snails remained. Bummer.

I think H&R bare roots the plants and puts them over newspaper for a day or so out in the open, then repots. The bush snails drop off and their eggs get desiccated.

I found malathion to be highly toxic to the snails.
