Phalaenopsis mariae - yellow leaves and new basal growth Male
Default Phalaenopsis mariae - yellow leaves and new basal growth

I was given this Phal mariae today because it's not doing so well.
Unfortunately I'm unable to diagnose and cure it, any idea of the issue?

It is actively growing a TON of roots, and 2 new shoots. Is it worth trying to save it or can the problem spread?

The original growth appears to be on its way out, though the newest leaf and the crown look OK. But with lots of roots, and new basal growths, I think that it will survive nicely even if it loses the main growth. If you haven't repotted it, that would be first order of business if it were my plant... if there is anything bad going on in the pot, you'll find it and potentially treat, or just clean it up.

Several things come to mind:
  • It may not have been fertilized for the last decade.
  • It may have been kept in far too much light.
  • It may have spider mites.

Thank you for the suggestions. Thankfully it doesn't seem like a death sentence, and there was nothing at all in the pot.
I gave it a fresh media and a good soak of kelp extract, I hope it'll bounce back and be happy.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the picture was "too much light." Do like Roberta said and repot it, then put it somewhere that gets indirect light, or just a little morning sun, or at a window with a sheer curtain to filter the light. It doesn't look at all like it's going to die. If it has good roots and active growth point or points, it can easily recover.
