Nope! New roots and branching roots are always good!

Yes, its a similar principle! Let me know if you ever have questions about PET! Or just Catasetums in general!

Thank you.

Wine delight is out in the balcony right now. Flies bugs and bees are checking her out. I was out there for a while with her- a fly swatter in one hand until I realized that no one stands guard out there in nature and certainly not expert growers. So I took a big sigh and headed back in 😀.

I’m careful with my first and only bunch of (exotic) orchids, but i did it😀 yay! It was like leaving a kid for the first day of school.

I’ll try the PET once she’s big enough-I’ve got a container set aside for her already.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

Default Cycnodes Wine Delight Update and pictures

Hello

Many, many thanks to everyone here at the OB who provide us all with growing advice and encouragement.
I didn’t think I’ll see any blooms because the leaves have turned yellow.

I am now experiencing all the rave about the Cycnodes Wine Delight’s cherry-scent and beautiful blossoms. My ‘Cycnoches lehmannii x Mormodes sinuata’ bloomed and I’ve not owned any orchids, other than the Phaleanopsis.

Imagine my delight on September 17 when I discovered buds. The blooms have just fully opened and they look and smell great.

I was just wondering if there’s anything I need to do differently next year so that I could get bigger and glossy-(er) blooms. This year, they have been growing directly under 1200w grow lights from July up to now. Humidity range 50-70, daytime temps 31/18 at night in the summer, 26 daytime and 16 at night right now, grown in bark.

Next year, I will plant it in a smaller pot, as was suggested here and try PET once I see new growth with new root but I won’t water till new roots are 5” long.

I haven’t touched the pollen to see if it will eject onto my finger.ill try not to scream when it does . I also wonder if these are male or female or if there really is such a thing.

Could it be that the blooms will get glossier as it opens up some more, or if I expose it to sun (need to check forecast for that); or could it be that they’re not as glossy because they’re not the JEMs?

I also didn’t fertilize regularly after I saw the buds, thinking that I’ll blast them buds-possibly.

Anyways, I’m feeling super happy, given that I’ve not seen these types of orchids, specially the scented once (I wish our monitors have ‘scratch and sniff-ability’ because my friends and coworkers are at awed about these scented orchids...they don’t believe I’ll have a chocolate-vanilla-cherry scented room once the buds on my Oncidium twinkle and O. sharry baby red fantasy open hopefully while wine delight is still in bloom

I'd say you've got a good plan going forward! Definitely fertilize heavily all through the growing season.

Also, the yellow spotting on your leaves make the think you might have a heavy spider mite infection on that plant. Take a tissue and rub it on the leaves. If you see orange streaks, you've got spider mites. If present, nuke those little jerks!! They'll tear down a Catasetum collection quickly.

Catasetum is the one with pollinia on a trigger. Mormodes isn't dimorphic... and I don't think the hybrid of the two is either. (Takes after the Mormodes parent in that regard) So you won't have that "adventure" If you acquire a Catasetum, you can get that "action" ... but remember, if you do trigger the pollinia, the flower will die within a day or two, since it's "job" is done. Catasetums have really different male and female flowers, sometimes on the same plant either at different times or even at the same time. The males are showy, the females of all the Catasetum species and hybrids look pretty similar, sort of like helmets. Fragrant, last longer than the males, but relatively boring. Cycnoches also have distinctly different make and female flowers (some more distinct than others) but don't have that trigger.

Nothing "wrong" with Cycnodes! They're beautiful. In Cycnodes Wine Delight, the Morm. sinuata is the source of the rich red color and lovely shape. If you want a red Catasetum, look for Ctsm. Penang.
