My Jewel Orchid is Dying

i buy the normal sized hydroton in 40l bags and i run some through a sieve i made with 1/2" construction cloth to remove the real little guys ( i like to use them for smaller rooted species) then i throw them back in the bag so it is normal sized with less than the normal mix in of the small ones.

I was told, and it makes sense, that the little ones wick better bc they touch more and so on plants where i cant get the water to wick up the vase i will add more little guys.





About the plants, if you look you can see the sequence of the leaves and how it was large, then tiny, then okay and now hopefully back on track, it was in the exact same shape as yours and i cut it and did this...i MAY have dipped the cut end in clonex (rooting compound) but i do not remember and then i fed it with water with slightly more kelpmax than i normally do for feeding but at every watering

I’m not DC but I use 8mm Hydro Crunch. Hydroton
is supposed to also be good, but I’ve never used it.

I picked up some cuttings of this about 6 months ago, I have them planted in 2 different mediums, straight soil with some perlite and some succulent mix with perlite.
They are growing, I believe I was giving them way too much light so they are half red and green after backing off. I keep them pretty well watered. Soil is damp, try not to dry them out.
For all I know I am just getting lucky with what I'm doing and they are growing in spite of me, hoping they perk up with warmer weather and less light.

Is your medium "moist" or does it tend to be "soggy?" The MPetola can't tolerate soggy soil. Having excellent drainage but keeping moist is a tricky one. Those two things matter most, then humidity. Yellow leaves and your rotting/withering stem sound like soggy soil. Curled leaves sounds like low humidity.

You have in low light level, right?

SemiHydro is a really good way to go with this plant, with a caveat... SH tends to make the temperature a bit cooler, so you have to make sure you keep the plant on the mid to higher temperature side as listed above.

PS I'm not well versed in geography, but both DCoconuts and SouthPark grow in very tropical environments, so take that into consideration with whatever your temperatures are in the Netherlands.

It wouldn't surprise me if the temperature in my house was also a problem. In the summer it's nice and warm, but fall/winter (and I got mine in fall... it never made it to summer) my apartment is never more than 68F. It stays pretty much the same temp, doesn't go much lower or higher. So I guess my apartment is just not right for such an orchid then.

Besides the air is dry, I have a humidifier (got it when I got a Calathea) but it's not enough for the entire big living room. I've got it standing right next to the Calathea.

I had read they don't like wet feet. Damp but not wet.

Sphagnum in a clay pot. I water when the clay pot feels completely dry on the outside. Humidity > 70%. Max temp 85 degrees

Thanks. How long do you have this plant? Can it be kept in moss permanently?

In habitat they grow horizontally through leaf litter on the forest floor, in deep shade. They are never dry. Sphagnum works fine. Don't bury the stems; just lightly press them in.
