reverse ossmosus maintenance
Hello, I am planning on buying an RO system (I rent one right now) next year. I know I cannot maintain my own system myself and would like to get a sense on how difficult and or time consuming it is to change the filters and hoses.
Any replies will be welcom.
Regards, m

There shouldn't be any reason you can't maintain your own system. For the most part all you will have to do is unscrew the canister and put in a new filter or charcole cartrage and screw it back on. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes once or twice a year. Ray would be a good one to ask about this since he sells the units.

I agree with John. I have a Culligen unit maintained by them and I watched, closely, when they did the service. I can do that! And for far less than the monthly rental. I plan to replace my Culligen with one of Ray's units. I have one of Ray's now (the 60 GPD unit) and it was brainless to install and seems to be brainless to service. Why pay rent?

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback; I had read something about sterilizing the water tubes so I was a little concerned. I will have to get my neighbour to do any changing of filters since I am a quadrapelgic and we don't do that sort of thing well!
I have a year to go on my Culligan contract then I am going to kick them to the curb. They are expensive to rent here and they only do one yearly changing of filters or you have to pay and I don't know if I am seeing things but I think that I have noticed the water isn't as clear as it once was. Maybe its me.
I am hunting for a Zero Waste RO system and so far, all I have found is one carried by Costco. As I get closer to the end of my contract, I will get serious about looking.

One of the things to buy is a TDS meter it measures the dissolved solids in the Ro. water. With it you know when it is time to change the filters . E bay has them, not expensive . Gin

Glad you mentioned that. They are great for measuring TDS in all sorts of conditions.

Hi Gin and Ross, I have just checked ebay out and saw the selection ranged anywhere $16 to $22.00. Is there something I should look for to select one suitable?
many thanks, m

Make sure it will measure as high as 1000ppm and accurate down in the <10ppm range. Hopefully you won't be getting readings much above 10. I get 6-8ppm.
