Orchids around the Yard. Male
Default November 21017 part 2

Some more from November's flowering orchids.

First a Epidendrum stamfordianum blooming at a friends house. I'm hoping she'll give me a cutting next year as these seem to deal fairly well with the dry season, so I could put it in a tree that I don't water.

Now to my garden. Here's a small Maxillaria that is blooming for the first time. I have a few that are fairly similar, yet slightly different. Maybe the species is just variable.

And a Epidendrum that has flowers identical to E. nocturnum, but has darker, almost purplish, leaves.

More to come.....

p.s. if anyone knows what sort of Sobralia that final one might be let me know. It fell out of a tall tree a couple years ago in northern Costa Rica and has been a strong bloomer since it got established again at my place. But I'm not sure what species it is.

I've been playing around with cross-pollination now for a bit and you can just barely make out that bit of thread wrapped around the seed pod stem which is my marker that I crossed it with something else, some sort of Epidendrum I believe. I got probably close to a hundred seed pods in going at the moment. I'm curious to see if the hybrids will germinate in non sterile environment. Here's some from a red reed-stemmed Epidendrum that are soon to pop. The center one is hybrid pod, the other two pollinated on their own, so probably selfed.

Default November 2021

Here's some of what's interesting in my yard lately.
A Cynoches warszewiczii with male flowers, first time blooming for me.

Flickr
Dimerandra emarginata is a pretty little orchid that sparkles in the sunlight. But they are prone to self-pollinating before the flower even opens and they multiply like weeds.
Orchids around the Yard.-dsc00473-dimerandra-emarginata-jpg
A Prostechea that is one of the three types that I have that are all fairly similar to P. fragrans. This is the most fragrant of the 3. It smells like honey.
Orchids around the Yard.-dsc00511-prostechea-cf-fragrans-unmarked-share-jpg
A Bratonia 'Shelob Tolkien', a fairly common hybrid here.
Orchids around the Yard.-dsc00499-bratonia-shelob-tolkien-unmarked-share-jpg
Some first time blooming species from plants that I germinated in my yard.
A Galeandra arudunis that is going to bloom soon in less than one year from germinating. Lots of these germinated on live posts. But this is the only one I think will bloom this year.
Orchids around the Yard.-dsc00549-galeandra-seedling-getting-ready-bloom-unmarked-share-jpg
And a Brassia that I moved to a pot a year ago is also a first for my homegrown orchids.

For those interested some non-orchid stuff.
Some native Bromeliads are putting on a display.
Tillandsia anceps

Aechmea angustifolia

Aechmea cf. nudicaulis

The Ginger is in bloom too.
