Welcome to Florida (soon)! I hope the transition is a fun one for you. Maybe I'll see you at the Redland show (that one is a must).

I agree..I struggle here with the extremely dry frigid winters. My plants need constant misting, otherwise they're left vulnerable to attack from spider mites. I'm sure I'll have similar struggles in Florida but for different reasons. At least the temps never get below zero there!

Being able to grow tropical plants (especially orchids) outdoors was a big reason I moved from CA to FL four years ago. I've got several orchids growing in trees which haven't been affected by the few minor frosts we've seen over the past few years, though the majority of my collection are in wooden baskets; they hang beneath a large chinaberry tree Melia azedarach spring through fall, though I do bring them into my lanai during winter.

I do this for two reasons: 1) cold protection - the lanai is open on 2 sides, so protects the plants from wind and from harsh cold settling in from above (and allows me to warm my cluster of hanging plants with a space heater if an especially bad cold snap comes through, which I've done twice), and 2) I've got a number of shade-loving orchids and the chinaberry loses its foliage in the winter, so their leaves will burn even in the winter sun without the added protection of the lanai roof and screens.

Good luck with your move!
