I love the coquis (even though, yes, their exuberant singing takes a little getting used to). During two years of living in Puerto Rico, the only time I ever saw them was during thunderstorms at night, when I would sit on the veranda of my home and watch some of the larger rain drops fall in the wrong direction. Only later did a friend of mine, who had grown up in Puerto Rico, explain that what I was seeing wasn't gravity-defying raindrops, but coqui frogs jumping across the patio during storms. It's amazing how such miniscule frogs can leap such great distances. After that I started to enjoy their singing--even though I was never able to find one of them during the day. Thanks for sharing the picture of your resident frog.

Coqui at night

For some years I have heard a frog/toad singing all night. I mentioned it to a friend and she told me it was a tiny toad. It wasn't until this summer I finally saw one. And they are small-about 1-1/4" long and a brownish/maroonish color. When I say "sing" I mean a very musical chirping that is by no means irritating. Another thing is that I usually hear only one at a time. No replies from another area or back and forth communication.
They seem to like to hang out on my orchid table and for that I am grateful. :)

That's so awesome! I love frogs (& lizards too)... Here on the coast of NC, after we get a good rain storm, all of the (thousands of) frogs start to sing, & when you're beside the marshes, it can be deafening! It's a really wonderful thing to hear... & I agree with Orchidsarefun, the presence of frogs shows how well the ecosystem is doing :)
