Swamper, I've also wondered if it's the same orchid but I don't know how many people in Florida attach Oncidium sphacelatum to their trees (the only answer can be "not enough!"). If I was in Florida I'd be the Johnny Appleseed of Oncidium sphacelatum.

Here in SoCal it's impressive when all the houses on a street have Jacaranda trees planted on their parkways. Imagine in Florida if all the trees on a street's parkway were Delonix regia with Oncidium sphacelatum mounted on them.

The city planners in Florida should make it SOP to attach Oncidium sphacelatum, Encyclia tampensis, Cyrtopodium punctatum and Ionopsis utricularioides to each and every tree they plant. The Florida Orchid Societies could rally their members to lobby their local city councils to make it happen.

Here in Miami, I had one that was taller than my two-story house. However, we had to cut it down because one summer it became home to a flock of birds, who proceeded to bathe our cars with bird poop on a regular basis. They didn't go away no matter what we tried to do.

Some neighborhoods have lots of them planted, and they look awesome.

I agree though--not too many people around here put orchids on trees. The hobby isn't really that well established here--at least not for anyone except the orchid freaks. You'd think it would be otherwise, right?

We have a lot of Jacaranda and even more Royal Poincianas around, almost too many in my opinion. I prefer Quercus virginianas and then I would have vandas as my choice of orchid.

That is an amazing and wonderful tree, but I have a soft spot for the natives, specially in my limited space. So why go with vandas instead of native orchids? I don't know

I suppose I have a grudge against vandas, since I couldn't grow one to save my life (hanging my head in shame) Why can't they be more like Laelias?
