Sophronitis coccinea: really red, really flat Male
Default Sophronitis coccinea: really red, really flat

Here's a little Cattleya (Sophronitis) coccinea that just opened. I was surprised at how flat it is. It's a 4n from Sunset Valley Orchids, bought at our conservation table at the San Diego show in 2016. It pays to go to the shows

Wow!!! Show it to Fred. He might want to use it in breeding.

And perhaps you should take it for AOS judging, if it's available near you. I'm not a judge so I don't know whether the quality is good enough, but members of Orchid Board are judges.

Very nice form and color. Have toyed with trying one of these but their desire for cool growing conditions means they likely would not like it in my apt.

You are all very kind. I have struggled with Sophronitis, finally keeping it wetter than before. I have 2 others that have not bloomed yet.

Wow, what a gorgeous bloom! It's so unbelievably flat. I also have to admore these from afar since I can't give the species the cool temps or bright light it needs.
