I'm glad you like it! I wish it could last a few more years in there but I'm afraid the media will be too broken down by the end of next summer (after 2 years I normally need to repot).. I'll probably repot in the same fashion, except I will drill more holes and do it before I pot it! I'll try to see if I can find some nice plexiglass that is as clear as glass to facilitate the hole drilling process.


Oh and if ever someone reads this and wants to do the same, I'd highly recommend putting a small plastic pot upside down at the bottom or the vase. It reduces the amount of media, will breakdown slower and creates a large pocket of air. I do this with my large oncidiums when potted in 6+ in pots (especially the deeper ones), not sure why I didn't think about it when I did this one....

Not really, minor amounts on lava rock and some of the bark exposed to sunlight... Algae is completely normal and not harmful at all in most conditions... All my phal species are mounted on cork slabs and the moss turns completely green after only a few months. The roots on the moss eventually develop the same green layer of algae, I've never seen any negative impact, they keep growing and striving. If you've got organic material, sun and water, you will get algae...

Agreed, but I prefer seeing sheet moss growing in my see-through pots. Tends to grow on top too and keeps things evenly moist.

I hope I don't sound ignorant but how do you have moss growing? I've never seen live moss for sale? But maybe we just don't have this around here, or i haven't been looking at the right places? The sheet moss top dressing stuff I've seen is always dead..

On a side note I did try to add Spagnum moss on the top at some point to keep things evenly moist, but it reduced the breathing capabilites of the mid jar section, quickly removed it.

Hi, this is what I mean. I got my moss from my terrarium. It grows in my terrarium, and it's out of control. So every now and then I take bit and spread about. Works great in clear pots.

It is possible to do Phalaenopsis in vase culture with no medium, similar to Vandas. Watering is by soaking then draining the water off. No root rot at all.

I'd call that more bareroot then growing in a vase!
