Default My Bletilla Striata is in bloom.

I've been happily watching the progress of my Bletilla Striata (otherwise known as the "hyacinth orchid") as it has been waking up from its short winter nap. The blooms have progressed enough that I just couldn't resist snapping some pictures any longer.

If anyone gets the chance to raise this terrestrial orchid, I would highly encourage them to give it a shot. Extremely low maintenance, and perfect for the beginner, with a stunning long lived spire of inflorescences, which have a faint rose-like fragrance when you're quite close to them. They're a ideal candidate for outdoor growing. Here in Houston they only hibernated for a couple of months before shooting back up, but in cooler climates they would take a longer nap.

Anyway, enough out of me, here are the orchids!

Very nice!
I'm now in love with terrestrial orchids since my Spathoglottis plicata started, and has continued, blooming since November.

I'm going to get me some more/different 'ground orchids' and I'd love to try some Bletilla striata.

The bloom color is lovely!

How tall are you plants?
My Spathoglottis is about 1.5 feet on the leaves and a bit over 2 feet with the flower stalks.

Again. lovely orchid and really nice pictures.

That's lovely! I have a Bletilla ochracea (sp?) that is pushing up spikes right now, and I can't wait. I think it is shorter than the striata, the leaves are only about 8 inches high.

I just looked up the Spathoglottis plicate - what a gorgeous plant! I may have to look into getting one myself.

The leaves on my plants get to be about a foot high, and with the flower stalks reaches around 1 1/2 feet, so it's almost the same size.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

fishmom: That's exciting! the ochraceas are beautiful, I'm sure the wait is killing you haha.

No-Pro-mwa: Even if you can't grow them outdoors, I know that the Bletilla striata has a reputation as an easy houseplant as well. You can still give it a shot !

u bada: Thank you! I feel the same way, their leaf form and growth habit make me think more of typical wildflowers than other orchids, which I feel is a plus.

This year I planted the first corms of Bletilla myself. Nothing to see at the moment ... I hope for next week!
