Not to worry.
I've always believed that life without risk is boring.
The lava flows are mild, almost no risk.
But, they do add a little excitement to life here.
Now, the high winds we've been having are another story.
They add a lot more excitement.
So far I've been able to deal with their effects as they have been happening.
Another of my "barn cat" orchids has come into bloom.
It is a Dendrobium NoID hybrid:
This was a gift from a friend, our landlord from when we rented a place while we looked for a place to buy after we first arrived here in Hawai'i.
He had about a 6 foot wide section of these Dendrobiums growing on the top of a lava rock wall.
I had not seen them in bloom yet, but having specialized in Dendrobium section Dendrobiums while in AK, I had coveted them ever since I first saw them.
After we got moved into our new place, I asked him for some starts from them.
He said sure no problem.
He walked over to them, grabbed a big handful, gave them several hard yanks, and ripped them out from the planting.
I almost had a heart attack.
I yelled "NO!
I have finally learned since then that most tropical plants grow like weeds, literally.
I took that handful and tied it to one of my Ohia trees:
In another year or two this tree will have as big if not bigger a planting as his rock wall.
Not in bloom right now, but I just mounted this Doritis pulcherima var. champorensis 'Pink' in my Geometry tree.
It is the first orchid I've mounted in that tree.
The tree has so much foliage that lower light requirements are needed for the orchids that go on this tree.
It is a bit hard to see up there, but there are more branches above it like the one it is sitting on.
I might try some Phals in this tree if this Doritis does well here.
