hahaha MFN ----- I really actually love all phals. I've just been partial toward fangless ones (even though I really like them all) --- which is just a term we all made up to put the phals into a couple of categories ------ one which has the tendrils located at the front of the lip - giving the appearance of fangs etc. And then the ones that have such small tendrils (almost passing as none, or unnoticeable) ---- or maybe none at all ----- into the 'fangless' category haha.

TM ------ not sure ----- but I think a lot of mini phals are like that. The little tendrils are small, and don't have the appearance of the fangs. But I think some mini phals really have none at all - not even tiny ones. Will check!

well, just thought more about it and i guess we could assume that either violacea or speciosa or both have fang less as a trait. (reposting a pic, sorry)

That pinky-violet and white one is a nice one! That definitely looks fangless! Your guess definitely makes sense as well.

well, curious to dig a little deeper about this, i consulted my go to pic guide of phal groups, and was actually a bit surprised by the closer look. pictorially, and with a sample size of n=1 mind you, it appears as if fangs are actually far in the minority of trait expression.

the only obviously visible fanged lips are in the true phalaenopsis group, with amabilis, phillipensis, sanderiana and schilleriana displaying that. edit to add, stuartiana as well. all other species have a no fang lip.

truly didn’t expect that, but again perhaps this isn’t the most reliable method as there is only one example of each species shown. but it’s something of an answer anyway...you can click the pics to see other examples of them, but i haven’t gotten that far

how do you train a spike?

last week the buds went pretty pale in a day or two and i thought they were gonna blast. but since then the colors have been filling in more every day and now im hoping it’s gonna open soon! looks like there might be spots or bars developing on the margins, so im excited to see what happens there. love to know more about this cross if anybody has any info?!
Congratulations! Are those as big as the leaves are going to get in this plant? Is it fragrant?
Thanks, David

thanks david! it only gave us the 2 flowers and now both spikes are just sitting there....oh well! as far as leaf size, i am speculating that they are about maxed out, as the last 4 leaves are all about the same size. but as we have had all our orchids a year or less, im really not too sure, heheheh....

oh, and not fragrant
