Orchids in bloom late July. Male
Default Orchids in bloom late July.

Hello all,

I’ve been putting off posting some blooming pictures as I’ve been having a mosquito problem and going to the greenhouse has been unpleasant to say the least.

That said, here are some of the blooms I’ve had over the past 3 weeks.

(Plant names in separate post on this thread).

Orchids left to right and top to bottom:

V. Falcata ‘Kinroukaku’. Very fragrant of caramel and blooms 4 times a year.

Rlc. Black Forest ‘Dark Splendor’. The colors in the photo aren’t quite right. It is a dark wine color in person. Unfortunately the flowers were infested with thrips and did not last long.

Ctt. Siamese doll ‘Kiwi’. A waxy, spotted, lemon meringue fragrant Cattleya. Need I say more?

B. Grand Stars. My best fragrant Brassavola and maybe orchid overall. Smells nothing like the nodosa. Oddly, it reminds me of a recently washed swimsuit that had been worn to the beach. Somehow that’s an incredibly good and evocative smell. I am quite crazy with describing fragrances but others have agreed with me on the assessment of this orchid’s fragrance. It is like a better Rl. Glauca.

Phal. Violacea. Smells exactly like star magnolias. Prolific, sequential bloomer.

Bratonia Charles M. Fitch “Izumi”. Great simple hybrid. Extremely fragrant of black walnut fruit. It is quite musky like certain zygopetalums. I believe this is a trait passed down from Brassia verrucosa.

Renanthera monachica. A surprise bonus orchid I got from a nice shop.

Den. Rainbow Dance ‘Hanamizuki’. Rarer picotee clone of a common hybrid. Tomato scented.

Den. Angel baby. The flower on this one was defective this time.

Den. Love memory ‘fizz’. Good classic nobile.

I’ve never gotten a violacea because I’m not a huge fan of my Phal bellina... but star magnolias? You might have just sold me on it

No - but I will say more. A kiwi fruit in the form of a flower!

Have you got a good mosquito repellent?

In Australia, I use the time-tested 'Aerogard'. No mosquito will come near you once you put that on. Pretty sure there will a similar product over there. Aerogard ........ amazing.
