Wow, I didn't know U of A had any orchids..I wonder if U of Calgary does? I might have to check it out next month.

Every university must have an orchid collection, especially if they teach bontany....
They are an important aspect of angiosperm(monocot) evolution, being the most highly specialized which is why they are so unique. It just wouldn't make sense not to introduce orchids into the class

I took some shots today when I visited...
There were countless Onc. Sharry Baby blooms, its fragrance filled entire greenhouse. I didn't bother looking for a name tag, I knew its was sharry baby.

Phal fasciata was also in bloom. This one has two spikes. The label also read that its from the Philippines
Doritis pulcherrima had two spikes with numerous blooms. It's label also read South East Asia. This plant has numerous small growths and had two spikes. quite cute for a phal...
Dendrobium Allan Umaki
I didn't see a label on this one and I don't know what it is. (a bulbophyllum?)
and the paphs are in sheath!!

I went again to check out the paph buds and I found Prosthechea cochleata is just starting blooming with two spikes. It was labelled Epidendrum cochleatum, but I knew it couldn't be correct so I looked for the updated name under the Kew monocot list, seems it has changed genera a few times. I wish I had the room for an octopus orchid like this! the yellow was brighter in real life.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

The specimen sized Paph leeanum (insigne x spicerianum) put out its first blooms! many other buds on that plant. They grow their paphs in very high light but they bloom fine.The plant just look ragged because they spray water all over.

Great photography and thanks of sharing! That Paph is gorgeous! I've been wanting to try a Paph. insigne for a while now. This one is just as cool looking!

The others are beautiful also but that cymb sure struck me.
