Not to be long winded but there's a story that goes along with the red Dendrobium. It's a Noid and has been living with me for 2 years. When it was given to me it was in terrible condition with chewed leaves, mostly bare canes, and it's dead roots were completely overgrown in it's tiny 3 inch pot. Someone had also stuffed about 1/4 cup of time released fertilizer in the pot.
It was immediately repotted and began making it's long road to recovery on my rather underlit back porch. About a year later it got blown off the plant stand and broke in two at the base, so then it became 2 plants. The falling mishap didn't seem to phase it and it continued to grow. Once it became sizeable the canes began curving (begging) for more light. One of the plants kept falling out of it's pot so I mounted in on an empty half of a coconut shell.
The newest canes on both plants were big and healthy looking but they kept curving and failed to spike. I just knew they needed a bit more light so I hung them on the fence near the shade of a neighbors palm trees. They both came close to getting burnt so I kept moving them further back towards the shaded corner. Within days the potted Dendrobium initiated 2 spikes from one cane. The coconut mounted one didn't spike but is growing 2 new canes.
I've been diligently documenting the progress of the blooms in my photo gallery. The blooms are faintly perfumed for about an hour or two during the hottest, sunniest part of the day.
A Few Bloomers
I have a lot of spikers and a few other ones just beginning to bloom. They're not ready to have their pictures taken yet.
