Hi Jerry,
I think that they are both beautiful...the photo of Mendenhall is a little blurry, so that threw me off a bit...also, the Newberry blooms are not photographed straight on like the Mendenhall bloom was...

Having said all that, before reading your last comment, I was actually thinking that the Newberry blooms were nicer. Even though the petals aren't as wide, they seemed like they could be less recurved than the Mendenhall petals. Also, the lip looks nicer to me on the Newberry plant.

That's my worth.

I wasn't going to vote for either one because looking at them just boggled my mind. They were both so beautiful! No way could I decide. I have finally been able to settle on the Newberry because I really like the lip. I wouldn't leave either one on my porch unattended though. They are just gorgeous. I am still gone on them both. I have a Newberry baby. Someday my bloom will come! Carol who is going back to real life now.

They are very close in quality, and the photos aren't taken from the same angle to the flower so it is impossible to judge them fairly. The 'Mendenhall' clone was probably awarded 20 years ago, and they probably didn't take the 'Newberry' clone in for judging.

The Carter and Holmes website mentions that "Mendenhall' is a larger flower so that is probably why it was awarded in comparison.
