Have fun!
I always want to go to a show but I'm extremely socially awkward.

It's not the people so much as it is me lol.
I dislike talking to strangers, smiling at random people, and going out in general is pretty stressful.
I do... because as tiring as it is I don't really wanna become a recluse.

But a crowded show with lots of vendors I need to talk to us a bit much for me.
I'll have to make an orchid friend to go with me. I'm a lot better with support.

Hey, I know this is off topic a bit, but I think you should go to one. Hear me out.

Go and keep your head down the first time, don't talk to anyone or smile at strangers. If an orchid you like doesn't have a price on it, the vendors are usually so busy that if you don't want to talk about it beyond asking about price, you won't be forced to. Don't stand around anyone solitary (they might try and talk to you if they're by themselves too) or large groups discussing the orchids on display, (someone might try and include you in the discussion.) You'll have fun looking at all the orchids even if it's by yourself. Going to an orchid show can be a very solitary activity if you make it one. Then maybe the 2nd or 3rd time you try to go to one, you might be more comfortable there in general, making small talk, but again, you don't actually have to if you avoid it, (which isn't hard.)

I'm not socially awkward or even shy, but I am used to the way people are in NY, and am trying to get used to how friendly and chatty people are here in the south. It was making me awkward and half the time I feel like a jerk, because I'm not used to so much smiling and small talk with strangers, all day, every day, almost everywhere you go. It's exhausting to me most of the time and I just want to buy my groceries without having a conversation with the cashier. In NY people mostly ignore others, we're very "cold" and I'm used to going about my business that way. I know that sounds terrible but it's what I've grown accustomed to and it's nothing like that here. It's taken me nearly a year to get over the random smiling and conversation in public, but I don't assume people are being sarcastic when they try and talk to me anymore, so that's something!

Anyway, just putting that out there. The first orchid show I went to when I moved to Fl, I didn't talk to anyone, but it was because I didn't realize it was such a "social event" around here and I didn't know anyone yet. I made a point to change that, because I didn't want to be anti-social, but you totally can be when you go to one. If you're the type of person who can have fun by themselves, and it sounds like you might be. Orchid shows are so much fun and such a great way to see different types of orchids in person, I'd hate for anyone that loves orchids to miss out because their a little more on the introverted side.

I am very trusting of strangers since as a child I was never warned against them=I will accept your candy=but if you betray my trust then there is no turning back; I will mistrust you forever....when somebody smiles and look me in the eye and says something pleasant= I am compelled to reply in the same manner of pleasantry....it is good manners than social etiquette.

My point is that this simple act can be very, if not too stressful for those with social anxiety, which it sounds to me like Ordphien has. Although it's not a great response to totally hide in social situations, it's usually the best way to try something like this 1st, get more comfortable, then slowly ease your way into being more friendly. I had a friend with such bad social anxiety, she had to take medication before class just to get through the day. I may not understand completely, but I've gotten the general idea of how this can work for someone.

Right, we should exchange places....he will be pretty much left alone here in Manhattan that no one will even look at him nor talk to him and I will be the congeniality in SoCal...heh

It's amazing how people can be so different in different communities. We lived out in the country for years and I didn't see many people. I was going a little loonie with a parrot being my main company a lot of the time.
Here people are very friendly. It took me quite a while to get used to people again.
