Folks have contacted me via PM for an update, so I'll start by apologizing for not doing so!

My wife, Michele, our mini-dachshund, Hobbes, and I have been enjoying a somewhat nervous, "forced vacation" at my sister-in-law's home in Greensboro since late Tuesday. Oak Island is under a curfew through 6 am tomorrow, when they will consider reopening one or both of the bridges.

The eye of Flo is past, but the eastern side of the storm, where the most significant forces are, including storm surge from the ocean, is still passing through.

That's of the most concern for us, as our lot is elevated just 13' above the water, and the house is only another 6' above that. We do have a lot of big trees in very close proximity to the house, so they can be an issue as well, but we're fairly shielded by other houses, so here's hoping...

From what we can see from FB posts by locals that did not evacuate, things have actually gone pretty well. Beach-front homes took the brunt of it, and there is street flooding, signs down on businesses, and a few trees down, but electricity stayed on.

The attached image is a Google satellite view of the island. We're the blue dot sitting on the north side, on the intracoastal waterway. Wilmington is off the upper right.

It's good to hear from you, Ray. I know it's not over yet, but it sounds like so far, so good for your location. Knowing where Oak Island is, I was fearing the worst, especially seeing the flooding and damage happening in other parts of NC and SC. Fingers crossed that you will soon be able to return home safely, with a minimum of damage and clean-up to deal with.

Reports from home are that from a house perspective, all is well. Didn't even lose power. However...

ALL the roads are flooded, somthere is no telling when we'll be able to get home. Could literally be weeks. Our boat is on land at Southport marina, so if I could get there, I could get home by water, but Southport is cut off as well.

Glad your house and your family is ok.

I follow several meteo sites (one of my area of interest) and forecasts say that it might take some time to people be able to get to their homes.

Another thing that was a major contributor to that is the storm speed, which has been too slow. So slow it can be considered stationary. This, together with the huge amounts of rain, is creating caos.

I guess that's a good news/bad news kind of situation. I'm glad to hear that it sounds like your home and property are okay, and it's absolutely amazing to me that you did not lose power, but it will definitely be a major inconvenience to be stranded away from home for any lengthy period.
