When you get a tip and it turns into a haul!

By happenstance and pretty amazingly, I was browsing the orchid subreddit and came upon a grocery story find of miltoniopsis. I looked at the user name, which listed my state and a zipcode within a half hour drive from me. I messaged the user, and turns out he is a member of my local OS and he gave me some orchid sightings- where to find the miltoniopsis and also bag babies! So, today, I went orchid hunting and, with his help, I have added to my collection. I hope someday to actually be able to meet my fellow OS members, but they meet on Saturdays and I work pretty much every Saturday.

Anyway, I present my finds!

The two miltioniopsis - NOIDs but I might contact the grower and see if I can get their names/crosses. The yellow one smells divine and filled my car on the way home - it smells very floral, like roses. The purple and white one has no scent but is lovely anyway.





And the bag babies:


Back, left to right is: Den. convolutum - green, B. Little Stars, Bepi. Golden Peacock - orange, and C. Volcano Plum in the front.

The Little Stars and Golden Peacock both have sheaths/buds forming and new growth. The other two don't have signs of flowers but do have new growths. I suspect the Volcano Plum may be a while because it is one of the true bag babies ($7 one), while the others I will call bag toddlers ($13).

The names might be slightly wrong, it's just what the tag says.

Nice haul indeed, I've never come across a yellow Miltoniopsis, I'm not a big fan of yellow blooms, but with a rose scent I would make the exception 😆

Whelp, I started unpotting the Dendrobium, and found a second tag.

So, the Better Grow tag says "DEN. CONVOLUTUM-GREEN"

The othert tag is from H&R Nurseries and says "Den. Green Mist x Andree Miller"

Thoughts?

I already know I am probably going to have to wait til it blooms...

Love the miltioniopsis!!! I got the same Dendrobium, Brassalova 'Little stars,' and a Bpl 'Golden Peacock Orange,' whatever that is. I also got another that I have never heard of, Epicatarthron 'Hilo Adventure.' Can't find much on that and only a little on the Golden Peacock. So, if you did, let me know. Otherwise, I assume Catt in the blood and moved it them to the highest light I have.I was hoping the Dendrobiun was 'Little Green Apples.'

What a great haul! The Miltioniopsis are beautiful. I have a purple one, Bert Fields, I've had for years and need to repot. I had a gorgeous yellow one, lost it while on vacation. It was called Andrea West, and looked a lot like your plant. It had a wonderful fragrance as well. The yellow color was very soft, like butter.

Those are all very attractive and healthy-looking plants! I especially like the yellow flowers, with that deep, intense yellow against the background of pale, pastel yellow. If you learn the name of it, do let us know!

These are my first miltoniopsis, so we'll see how they do . I don't normally go for the big plants, but I had to try these guys. The yellow one was a catch - twice the size of any of the other milts at the store. Still love the fragrance - I smell it every time I pass by it.

Dolly, I haven't found much on the Golden Peacock, but it is a hybrid of Bc. Richard Muller and Prosthechea (Encyclia) vitellina. Apparently it is now called Procatavola Golden Peacock.

Anway, according to BlueNanta it's parentage is: 50% P. vitellina, 25% B. nodosa and 25% C. milleri (now Laelia, I can't keep up with these changes!)

The nodosa and the milleri like it really bright and the vitellina not so much. Nodosa likes it warm, milleri seems to be tolerant of a range and vitellina likes it cool.

All that means, to me, standard Cattleya conditions would probably work. I mounted mine on some Ecoweb today. It'll spend a week or two in lower end Catt light and I will probably move it into the southern window after than.

I can't say anything about the Epicatarthron Hilo Adventure except those are some cool looking blooms. If they had it, I would have bought it!
