Default Help with a protocol Question about aos judging.

I recently took a cattleya for judging. To my shock it won an AM/AOS. this is the first time I even went to a show where judging was done, and I thought the flower was nice, but really had no idea what to expect. The judge called me and said to come up to the show and pick up my awarded orchid before the show was over.,and provide a clonal name. At the bottom of the award photo it listed sponsors What is the function of the sponsors? I am very new to this sort of stuff even though I've been growing orchids for nearly 40 years.I'm embarrassed to know so little about the process.
thank you in advance for any help.
DeAnne

Congratulations on your AOS award!!
It is typical that all orchids in an AOS judged show are eligible to be pulled for judging. Once a plant is judged, if it scores an average score of 75 points or more, it can get a quality award. To get an AM/AOS, it needs to score 80 pts or more.
If awarded, a clonal name must be provided, and the plant should then have that clonal name after the grex name, along with the AM/AOS from then on. Any divisions of the plant should retain the clonal name and award designation.

In about 2 months or so, you should receive an invoice to pay the award fee. Best way to do it is online where the fee is less. The fee is $28 online if you go to American Orchid Society. At some point it will be published in the AQ plus computer program. There will be a brief description of the flower and measurements.

By the way, what was the name of the plant?

I have no idea why there are sponsors listed as the AOS judging doesn't have them. Perhaps these are the sponsors of the show?
Peter.

Default about newly awarded plant

the plants name is Blc. Pamela Saxton 'Dee's Delight' and it was awarded at the Mount Baker Orchid Society show 2-23-08. This is one of the unflowered seedlings purchased in 2003 from stewarts. As soon as I receive a jpeg image of the official award photo ,I'll send it along. Most of the stewart seedlings I have are now starting to bloom this year. I wonder what other surprises may be in store!
thanks for the help,DeAnne

Hi Deanne,

I'm the judge that called you about your award. As the regional center chair it is my job to organize and submit award data to AOS. All awards need a clonal name as they are unique and need to be identified specifically.

I'm not sure what sponsors you are referring to since AOS awards don't have sponsors. Perhaps you won a ribbon for best cattleya or some such thing; those are usually sponsored by people that donate prizes or money.

This BLC was a lovely lavender-rose color that absolutely glowed. It was a very deserving award for a beautifully grown plant. It is nice to see award to big standard cattleyas these days! They are not grown as commonly as 20-30 years ago.

I think the show might want to make this sponsor thing a bit more clear. As a judge I wouldn't be happy with the implication that awards are sponsored by anybody. I think the AOS would have issues with it as well...

Is it possible that it was just one of those ads that get attached to e-mails sometimes? I think if you use AOL or Google mail they add advertisements to the text.

Congratulations on the award, it sounds like a nice plant.

Thanks for the information,I'll catch on to all of this stuff. The big fragrant catts have been a passion for me after a friend gave me one back in the 60's. Started buying plants from stewarts when they were in the Los Angeles area .I've always had a small greenhouse with some plants. My current greenhouse is 9x12 and is too small for the 250 catts in it.These things seem to multiply like rabbits.
Hope to meet you at some future show,DeAnne

Thanks! As a hobby grower this was a real thrill, and totally unexpected.
