Default Bragging on my nephew

My 9-year-old nephew came to visit me a few months ago, and I guess his crazy aunt's orchids made an impression on him. When he got home, he asked for an orchid for his birthday. He is homeschooled, so he begged his mom to take him to the local botanical gardens to learn more about orchids and plants!

He came away with a cute mini phal and a beautiful dendrobium nobile-type hybrid, which he cares for on his own. Here are his lovely plants:

His mom has a phal that she has struggled with over the years. At one point I wrote her an 11 page document about phals and their care (I got a bit carried away on the subject!). She never read it, but my nephew found it, read it all, and uses it as a checklist to help him care for his plants. Mercifully, he is now caring for his mom's plant as well!

Now he can't wait to go back to the botanical gardens to buy a yellow paph that he has his heart set on.

I don't know whether to beam with pride or cackle with maniacal laughter!

Turock, that is just amazing. You must be so proud ❤️ I am going to try to get my 11 yr old nephew on board. I am going to gift him an prosthechea cochleata next week and I hope he cares for it as good as your nephew. He really liked the blooms on it when I first got it.

He is! He's very precocious, is totally absorbed in everything he does, and always wears a big impish grin.

Good luck! It's wonderful to see kids getting so involved in plants. I wish I was even slightly interested as a child!

How wonderful!

I know that when I was a child, I loved plants and my desire to learn about them led me to an interest in science. I would go to the library and ask for books about plants, then this led to books about weather, the sun, planets, etc. A child cannot go wrong being interested in plants.

So much better than video games. I love to see kids interested in plants of any kind. A much healthier interest than most children have now. His mom may be too busy to keep up with her Phal. and homeschooling. I have 6 kids and I homeschool (3 right now). It can be a challenge to find the extra time to care for the plants and avoid neglecting the school work because of it. But then again, "Who needs sleep anyway!"
