Glad to hear that your losses were not too bad in comparison to what it could have been!

There you go. Ten to fifteen plants is quite a blow, but I'm so happy to read that it doesn't look any worse.

What a wonderful update, I am glad it wasn't too many plants lost. Keep at it, this hobby is just too good to give up. It is stress therapy at its best and secondly I always love to hear about how everyone's orchids are doing on OB.

Wow, what a stressful experience for you and especially pregnant! Sorry to hear about this but congrats on the baby. Btw, what did you find out about the sex of the baby?

I can just imagine how you felt waiting to see how they would fair. Ten plants isn't chump change but like so many have said, now you have room for 10 more!! Think of it as survival of the fittest!

I went six weeks without watering a bunch of my plants very early on (unintentionally) and expected losses. Got home to fine sad looking plants but all of them survived! I was not only thrilled I was also very intrigued to discover just how hardy they are. I came here and shared my experience. Sharing your experience here no doubt let you vent some steam and I think you did a justice to us all teaching us a little more about how hardy they can be.

Again so for your losses but congrats on your gains! And hey ya know, just in time for the orchid shows.

I will definitely update the post once the system is setup. My husband has been a bit unlucky with his suppliers, so far, because the alarms they have hook up to land lines. We only have cell phones, so obviously those systems won't work. I did find an alarm online that we will most likely order, but we are going to try a couple more local places first (easier to return if it doesn't work for the purpose).

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, it was quite a few plants, but luckily most of the plants I lost are easily replaced without breaking the bank.

Thank you for your kindness! I will keep at it, but when I loose a lot of plants at once, it becomes a source of stress. Lol! Although, now that I know what will survive, I am much more positive about the situation.

Lotis, I am grateful for such a thoughtful response, thank you! It was my birthday the weekend after the "big freeze", my husband took me to an orchid greenhouse that's a little over an hour away. The owner is an elderly gentleman that I am very fond of and he was very generous with me when I picked out plants I wanted to buy. My friend also has a "buying group", so I was able to replace some of my lost plants very inexpensively. So there is a happy ending to my story of lost plants!

I am happy to hear that your plants survived their ordeal too! Orchids are amazingly more hardy than I had been told. I quickly learned their hardiness once I started growing, but have an even better appreciation after this experience. The general public really is misinformed about these awesome plants. I remember when I was a teenager admiring orchids at a local store, I was told how delicate they were and just touching the flower could ruin it!

And we did find out the gender of our baby. It's another girl!!!! We're all very excited! I asked my daughters if they would be this happy if it was a brother and they told me no because he wouldn't want to play the same things. Lol! As long as we have a healthy baby, we are excited and grateful!

So glad to hear things have continued down the positive road of happiness for you, that's great that your hubby did that and you have your friends you can count.

Wow, touch the flower and ruin it! Oh how wrong they were... Discovering their true nature has further encouraged me to keep up the hobby. If they were so fragile I'm afraid I'd have failed them and given up shortly after I started.

Congrats on it being a girl! Your daughters' responses are hilarious. They'll have plenty to teach and share with each other, ought to be funny for you...and so much for your hubby to worry about.

May your new daughter be healthy and strong!

Thank you again for all of your kind words and your congratulations!

I agree that if orchids were as delicate as I was told I definitely wouldn't have continued in the hobby either!

When we found out that we were having another girl, the ultrasound tech was talking about the price of prom/homecoming dresses. When we left the office, my husband asked me how much they cost because he had no clue. I told him not to worry about it now, but he kept on. I finally told him the price ranges and he did the math over the course of the girls' high school careers and he just mumbled, "That's the price of a "fun car" (he loves older, fast cars that he refers to as "fun cars"). Lol!

Well, I do know girls who got their prom dresses at resale stores. Saved their parents a mint and -- as long as they didn't babble to their friends about the "where" -- no one ever knew the difference. If your daughters wind up having a creative bent, they could make their prom dresses out of ducktape! (And for those who have never heard of such a thing, you'd be amazed at what can be done with it......... https://www.google.com/search?q=duck...w=1029&bih=543 )

I have seen the duck tape dresses, how amazingly talented!!! As for the dresses, I know there's a million places to get them for reasonable prices. We were just joking around because girls are rumored to be more expensive than boys. It was just us having a little fun!

Oh they ARE. You really want to terrify Eric? Bring up the topic of WEDDINGS! (Especially as you'll be the bridal parents!)
